Mistaken identity: challenges with specimen identification for morphologically conservative skinks (<i>Trachylepis</i>) leads to taxonomic error

چکیده

It is commonly recognised that natural history datasets contain locality errors can compromise the utility of those datasets. However, another source error in these taxonomic misidentifications, and this type potentially common, particularly with regards to morphologically conservative species. For example, African skinks, Trachylepis striata T. varia species complexes each similar are confused, despite being genetically distinct. Some also partly sympatric, misidentifications likely be especially problematic areas. Using DNA barcoding, we assessed misidentification rates between applied updated identifications known distribution maps examine whether accurate representations. Existing banked samples newly collected were barcoded using mitochondrial 16S gene supplemented GenBank data. Identifications made by matching sequences haplotype networks included material from near localities. The barcode-based compared original recorded for samples. Taxonomic was areas presumed sympatry (error complex: 28%; 31%) resulted inaccurately represented distributions sympatry. Areas were, however, confirmed spilogaster/T. punctatissima, striata/T. punctatissima damarana/T. laevigata/T. varia. Our findings corroborate other studies demonstrate existing a significant, but typically unrecognised problem, This has implications historical collections, citizen science records public databases used formulation maps, downstream analyses rely on

Mistaken identity: activating conservative political identities induces "conservative" financial decisions.

Four studies investigated whether activating a social identity can lead group members to choose options that are labeled in words associated with that identity. When political identities were made salient, Republicans (but not Democrats) became more likely to choose the gamble or investment option labeled "conservative." This shift did not occur in a condition in which the same options were unl...

Reply to "Mistaken identity of Brucella infection".

The letter of Yang et al. (1) is an interesting account of the continuing issues associated with the misidentification of Brucella species by the current commercial identification systems. As mentioned in the letter, we experienced similar issues with the commercial bacterial identification assays that rely on phenotypic laboratory tests (2). These systems remain unreliable for identification o...

A Case of Mistaken Identity..

Paragangliomas (PG) are rare tumors of the autonomic nervous system. Their origin takes part in the neural crest cells, which produce neuropeptides and catecholamines [1]. In 1050% of cases, they are hereditary, beginning at younger ages. In 80-90% of abdominal PG and 5-10% of head and neck PG, catecholamine production can cause arterial hypertension, headache, palpitations, anxiety and weight ...

Mistaken identity of Peptoniphilus asaccharolyticus.

Peptoniphilus asaccharolyticus is a commonly isolated Grampositive anaerobic coccus (GPAC) (7). However, the type strain, ATCC 14963, is not representative of the species. Huss et al. (4) described the DNA-DNA homology between the type strain and clinical isolates as being 25%. Because of this finding, new species were described (6), among them Peptoniphilus harei. P. harei has the same biochem...
